Why charge for subscriptions?

Arts Professional conducts independent investigative journalism in a world where facts are increasingly hard to find. To retain our independence, we neither seek out nor would accept any public funding whatsoever. But this independence comes at a price. 

It means that generating enough revenues to keep going is a very serious challenge. We have to secure a sustainable income stream at the same time as delivering a quality service to cash-strapped communities in the not-for-profit sector. It’s not easy.

Our income has to cover core costs, including our small office, our small staff team and our small overheads. But we also need to cover the big costs – including the ongoing need to invest in our infrastructure so that we can respond to reader demands for more content, better functionality and up-to-date technology.

Advertising revenue alone just won’t cover it. We’ve tried, so we know. And that’s why we’ve introduced a small subscription charge. If readers pay just a small amount to access Arts Professional, we can make the investment needed to keep it alive, thriving and serving the cultural sector for many years to come.
